 Union Rescue Mission-Hope Gardens
Giving Hope to Women and Children

Union Rescue Mission at Hope Gardens is a women's shelter committed to equipping and empowering women and their children to enter a new and independent life free from poverty and  domestic violence.

URM-Hope Gardens is located on a 77-acre facility at the base of Angeles National Forest, and is one of the largest women's shelters in the United States. The setting serves to stimulate a safe and beautiful environment conducive to learning basic life skills and achieving holistic healing. At the facility, women and their families work through the emotional issues associated with poverty and victimization. The facility currently serves a total of 117 individuals, including seniors, women, and children.

URM-Hope Gardens is entering its fourth year of partnership with FuturoNow, and offers the Within My Reach curriculum to all women who enter the facility. "Seventy to 80 percent of homelessness is caused by relationship issues, and the Within My Reach curriculum addresses those relationship gaps," explains Scott Chamberlain, Vice President of Women and Family Programs for URM-Hope Gardens.

Chamberlain said the majority of women attending these classes have relationship addictions, and commended the relevance of the curriculum for women suffering from the effects of domestic violence and relationship dependency.

"These women struggle with insecurity at the prospect of being alone in LA in this economy," Chamberlain explained. "They have relied on men for their security, which opens doors to domestic violence, power, and control issues. When the guy takes off, there aren't a whole lot of options for these women."

Chamberlain further explained how Within My Reach often produces deep emotional reactions from participants when  they realize the lasting impact their unhealthy relationships have had on them, and the mistakes they made along the way. "One of two reactions usually occurs in the participants. Some feel a sense of a 'light coming on' that brings incredible joy when they realize what went wrong (in their relationship) and feel empowered as they see their mistakes from a distance," Chamberlain said. "And some are very solemn at the reality of the condition they are in because of the choices they made and the realization that they do need help."

URM-Hope Gardens is now looking to address more "whole family" issues to strengthen relationships that have been strained due to homelessness. Through FuturoNow, the organization is now trained to offer Family Wellness classes to women in the program, which Chamberlain says will "give us the tools to address these family issues."

National Hispanic Marriage
Awareness Day

On Sunday, October 11 organizations across the country will celebrate Hispanic families at the National Hispanic Marriage Awareness Day.

Faith-Based and Community groups will host events across the country to encourage Hispanic families to strengthen their bonds through healthy communication and activities.

The ultimate goal is that an entity in every state would host an event to celebrate Hispanic marriage. For organizations interested in hosting an event, please contact a National Hispanic Marriage Day representative with the location, date, time, and website.
